A Return to the Valley of Milk and Honey

“It’s a funny thing coming home. Nothing changes. Everything looks the same, feels the same, even smells the same. You realize what’s changed, is you.”

This line (from the film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) is one of my favorite quotes and immediately struck me deeply upon hearing it for the first time several years ago. It popped back into my mind recently as I prepare to return to my hometown of Las Vegas, NV to play a Cuckoo Chaos show at The Neon Reverb festival. It’s been nearly a decade since I left the City of Sin in search of myself and an adventure. And I every time I go back it seems more and more the same as I left it. I do still enjoy spending a little time there now and again. There is something about it that appeals to me in a sick sort of way. As Hunter Thompson put so succinctly in Fear and Loathing… “There’s madness in any direction at any hour”.

But enough self reflection for now… and into the future! We are playing the Aruba Showroom on Saturday night. It is an 18-and-up event and is actually our first headling show in Las Vegas. The City Life weekly did a little preview of the festival featuring us which can be found by following this link. Here is the facebook event page with more details on the show and here is the poster:

SXSW recap

It’s been a while since I’ve posted on this here site, mostly because I have been so damn busy with all things Cuckoo Chaos. We just got back from touring down to the South By South West music festival in Austin, TX and as always it was a total blast and shit show at the very same time. This was my third year performing at the festival and hands down the most insanely busy week of music of my entire life. We toured down there with our friends Treasure Mammal (from Phoenix, AZ) playing four shows in the southwestern US.

Here is a shot of Abe (of Treasure Mammal) spitting some real talk at the University of Redlands. We always have a blast playing there and the kids really know how to get nuts! After leaving California we ventured into Arizona and played a house show in Phoenix followed by Brootal Sun Fest in Tucson the next night before making our way across the great expanse of desert that is the road to central Texas.

Once we got to Austin the real madness began. We played nine shows in five days which basically kept us in motion the entire time we were down there. You would think playing two to three shows a day wouldn’t leave much time for doing more than sleeping and eating but boy would you be wrong! This is my right arm after day one:

That night we met up with our manager Matt and talked our way into the Built to Spill / Youth Lagoon show being put on by IFC. It was crazy packed and nearly impossible to get a view of the stage. So during the beginning of YL’s set I walked up to the front of the club off to the side by the soundboard and told the security guards that I was the band’s manager. They believed me and let me through the velvet rope. This granted me access to the area directly between the audience and the stage where I sat on the floor and leaned on the monitors as photographers stepped over me busily snapping their cameras.

Some very nice British chaps came to see our final set on Wednesday and we became friends almost immediately. It turned out that they were all in a band from London called Zulu Winter and were also playing some shows at the festival. So the next day we made our way out to “The Tiniest Bar in Texas” to see them do their thing.

We thoroughly enjoyed their music and they were great performers to boot! I would highly recommend checking them out. Another highlight of the day for me was a random graffiti “battle” we happen to stumble upon. Two artists were given a blank wall and seventeen minutes to create a piece that would then be judged by the crowd as well as a jury panel. The event was emceed by a beat-boxer by the name of Reeps One who was seriously one of the most incredible things I have ever seen.

But of everything I saw down there this year, Deerhoof’s performance at the Lustre Pearl on Friday afternoon takes the cake. I’ve seen them before and it seems every time I do they somehow seem to get better. They might be the best live band I have ever seen and watching them play live I find myself smiling and laughing during most of their set out of sheer joy.

Overall the trip was a magical experience and left me feeling elated, exhausted, and as enthusiastic as ever about the power of music and people coming together. We crawled back into the van mere shells of our former selves with happy hearts and tired bodies and minds and made our way back home to garden of eden known as southern California. Here is a final shot of my arm at the end of the week long marathon:

Pics from the last VOADW show + SD City Beat article

The folks over at Invisible Children got some great shots of The Vision of a Dying World farewell show last Friday. You can check them all out on their blog.

The San Diego City Beat also ran a little story about the decision to end the project accompanied by a hilarious photo of a young Keith and I. That can be found here.

A farewell to The Vision of a Dying World

After nearly a decade of performing and releasing music under the moniker The Vision of a Dying World, I am putting the project to rest once and for all. I can’t believe it’s been almost a decade since Keith and I started recording strange demos in our parent’s house in Las Vegas, NV. So much has happened since then.

I have had the pleasure of watching Keith and Jeremy grow from awkward pre-teens into the incredibly talented, driven, and creative men that they are today. Along the way we made 6 records that I am extremely proud of. For most of the project’s existence we were just kids who had very little idea what we were doing, but we always played from the heart and that is all that really matters to me.

So many wonderful people have been brought into my life because of the path this endeavor has led me down. Jona Tellez-Giron is one of the finest drummers I have ever played with and has become one of the best friends I have in this world. Very few musicians can hold a candle to Mat “Doc” Davidson and it was an honor having him play beside me. Emily Sully and Hermon Farahi believed in us before we believed in ourselves and are much of the reason we ever got this thing off the ground.

To everyone else on the long list of people who have helped, inspired, encouraged, and supported this band I am eternally grateful. I have to specifically thank Donna and Mitchell Milgaten, Brian Miller, David Scott, Travis Wayne Cochran, Jane Weibel, Joshua “Rabbit” Richards, Andrew Jackson Jihad, jalipaz, Adam Grill, The Johnston Center, and the fine people of San Diego, CA and Las Vegas, NV. Without them, all would have been lost.

Lastly, love and respect to the people who came to our shows, played those shows with us, booked us at their club, and made us at home in their homes.

Sincerely,
Jackson Nathan Milgaten

*I will be playing one final show to say goodbye this Friday at The Luce Loft in the east village of downtown San Diego. This will be a solo show and I’m opening up for the LA based band NO. Here is the facebook event page and the poster:

Jamuel Saxon – ‘Pre-Madonna’

My little brother, Keith, is a man of many talents. Audio engineer, producer, graphic artist, DJ, composer, performer, musician… the list goes on. His latest musical endeavor is an electro/dance/pop project he calls Jamuel Saxon. In the last year he has really gotten his shit together with this one and (with the help of friend and drummer Jayson Ehm) turned what was once a “one man laptop band” into a fully realized ass kicking quartet. The culmination of their hard work has manifested in the form of their new full length record ‘Pre-Madonna’. Upon hearing it I instantly felt compelled to get on board and I am very proud and excited to be releasing it later this month on Single Screen Records.

The party to celebrate the release of the CD will be on January 19th at The Casbah in San Diego and you are all invited. It is being co-hosted by Sezio and I guarantee a booty shaking good time. Here is a link to the facebook event page and below you can check out the video for the first single, “Planetarium”.

Sezio Membership Party

My roommate Zack heads up the non-profit organization Sezio. They do some really great stuff in San Diego like curate and organize a slew of art openings, concerts, and community events, in addition to covering a wide variety of culture on their website. Tonight they will be hosting a group art show and party to celebrate the launch of their 2011-2012 membership program. The event will be held at the Luce Loft and you can get all of the details right here.
